Background

n 1992, I moved to the Bay Area and landed a job at Bonnie Smetts Design, where I designed calendars and books. Eventually, our design shop started producing small interactive promotions, and my career in new media began.

I brought my new "interactive" portfolio to Ikonic in 1994, and worked on several interactive television applications for Time Warner's Full Service Network (FSN). While the FSN's foray into interactive television was perhaps ahead of its time, the learning experience of creating complex interactive systems was invaluable. Ikonic discovered the importance of having team members who understood the technological possibilities (and limitations) and the needs of the user.

Ikonic eventually evolved a process that included a practice in information architecture and user interface design, assigning experts to identify the structure of a Web site and the user experience separate from the graphic look and feel. As director of interface design, I helped to create many tools and templates to assist in this process.

In 1999, I joined ThinkLink, a Web start-up creating its own product for the Internet and the telephone. As part of the Marketing and Product Management departments, I was able to fold my previous experience in interactive projects into the complete product cycle. With ThinkLink, I worked with other teams to identify a set of product features and establish a new brand based on market research, and continued this effort through implementation and support based on many factors, from usability testing to an ever-evolving business plan, common for start-ups.

The works in this portfolio represent a sampling of the projects that track my evolution in new media design and usability.
