Andy's Slips

Angela Rose Voulgarelis. Andy's Slips, 2000.

My work addresses my relationships with sensuality, vulnerability, and personal space. These aspects of femininity encourage awareness of my own body as a tactile form. Coupled with that, I have a visual interest in symbolism and simplicity of form, which has extended to my depiction of intimate undergarments such as slips and camisoles: they have an obvious connection with the female body, both on a personal and art historical level, and also represent a delicate space between an inner and outer self. My exploration of that relationship (between body and bodice) can be linked with wishing to reveal something not seen. This curiosity of intimate spaces opens myself to the viewer, creating a juxtaposition of (public) exposure and (private) self-reflection.
