 onstellating is a group exhibition of 10 young artists who participated in an artist-in-residency program in Florence, Italy and Capetown, South Africa between 1992 and 1999. Featuring works by Katerina Connearney, Tanya Hastings, Peter Howells, Amey Fearon Mathews, Reem Rahim, Tessa Sutton, Rebecca Szeto, Christopher Tradowsky, Megan Vossler, and Angela Rose Voulgarelis, the visually diverse exhibition explores the psychological tightrope between the conscious and sub-conscious Self. The residency program was developed and has been led by Rose Shakinovsky and Claire Gavronsky, South African professors of art who have both lived and taught in Italy for the past 13 years. The intensive 8-week workshop provides a context in which artists are given the opportunity to explore the true breadth of creativity as a process where spiritual awareness, critical thought and technical acumen merge into an artistic expression of multiple dimensions. In the ilk of Joseph Beuys, Rudolph Steiner, and Krishnamurti, stemming from the broader scope of esoteric traditions and philosophies, Shakinovsky and Gavronsky bring the possibilities of a new paradigm for creativity to the forefront, fostering an awareness of the relationship between art, inner growth and community and, in turn, inspiring transformative discoveries in and with the world at large. Sharing in this process of growth and learning, their experiences have culminated into this show of recent paintings, drawings and prints. Each artist's work resonates with a strength of its own, giving rise to an osmotic dialogue en masse. |
